project overview
SUPER ULTRA MODERN GRAPHIC is a printed publication that analyzes contemporary K pop design as a structured visual language rather than a fleeting trend. The project examines how hyper stylization operates as a system by cataloging recurring aesthetic codes such as maximalism, Y2K nostalgia, high saturation color palettes, and rhythmic visual repetition. The publication translates the kinetic intensity of screen based media into a static print format, focusing on how motion, tempo, and excess can be rearticulated through layout, typography, and sequencing. Instead of replicating digital aesthetics, the project abstracts their underlying logic and reconstructs them as a graphic system.
Design Methodology
The book is structured around a unified grid system that operates across three primary sections, each adapted to reflect shifts in content density and tonal emphasis. Rhythm and repetition function as organizing principles, guiding both image placement and typographic hierarchy. A precisely aligned supplemental insert is embedded within the main volume, extending the editorial structure while introducing physical variation and depth. This approach reinforces cohesion while allowing controlled disruption within the system.
Intent
Rather than serving as a visual compilation, the publication functions as an analytical archive and a design object that embodies the language it examines. By treating K pop visuals as a coherent grammar shaped by cultural production, labor, and collective authorship, the project foregrounds the designers and creators behind the industry. The book positions itself as both a critical study and a material articulation of a contemporary visual ecosystem.
